Behind the Pop Up: Granville Island, Vancouver

Our bags are packed and we're on the move! This season, we decided to bring the comfort to linen lovers all over North America. This month, our Pop Up team is staying local and nestling in to Little Mountain Shop in the Net Loft on Granville Island. We had a chance to connect with Natasha Neale, the founder of the collaborative space we get to call (Flax) home until July 31st!

How and why you did you decide to start cultivating and empowering creators and their companies?

"I'm a strong believer in supporting local. Whether it's artists, makers or entrepreneurs, we don't have to look far to find talent and quality goods. Supporting local creates community and community cultivates connection, and more than ever, we need connection to others."

What do you look for in the companies, creators and community you choose to work with?

"It's important to me to support women founders as well as BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ artist and creators. As a queer woman of colour, I want to create a space to uplift and elevate my community."

What do you hope people take away from visiting a Little Mountain Shop Pop Up?

"I hope that folks who visit Little Mountain Shop discover something new. I want them to feel like they've found something special. A pop up is temporary, so the fact that they've come into our space either by chance from walking by or intentionally taken the time to visit us is, is a moment I want them to enjoy, learn the stories of the companies popping up with us, and take home something they know that has been created thoughtfully. I want visitors of Little Mountain Shop to know that their presence and purchase makes a positive impact to everyone we work with, whether it's an emerging artist or an established brand, and that they are a valued part of our community."

Take us back to your first experience with Flax Home when it launched in 2018.

"It was exciting to have Flax Home (Flax Sleep back then) launch at Little Mountain Shop. We've been lucky to be a part of Vancouver's most loved companies as they launch their brand with a pop up at our space (Smash & Tess, Petits Vilains to name a few). I remember you could feel the energy and excitement that Vivian, Anna, and Oana had. Watching these women founders see their hard work and dreams coming into fruition was—and always is—inspiring. On a personal note, the first Flax Home pop up changed my bedding game since meeting them back in June 2018, as they are the ones who introduced me to linen and I've never looked back."

Finally, what can the community expect to see this weekend on Granville Island?

"I'm really looking forward to what Flax Home has in store with not only their collections, but with the pop up guests they've invited to have join them. Mandy from Trend with MJ is a sweetheart and I love that their gender neutral fashion brand brings positive vibes; Perks, Better Basics, and Meirako are all new to me, so I'm excited to check them out and meet the makers and welcome them into our space."
