The Corners of Our Homes Vol. 5 - Emily Walker

Known across the province for her discerning taste in wine, we are proud to call Emily Walker Flax Sleep's #1 Super Fan.   She was the sommelier at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver for many years and now she leads the charge of the exclusively B.C. wine list at Tap & Barrel.  Her good taste does not stop at wine.  She has a closet to covet and a new home in Summerland, B.C. that inspires.  We are excited to give you a peek into the space she has created to root this new chapter in her family's life.

Our family recently left the city and laid new roots in the Okanagan Valley – something we’ve talked about doing for years and we’re now about 6 months into this transition. The stresses of relocating a family with young kids are very real but the task of transforming our new house into a space that truly represents “us” has been an incredibly fun and creative process.

Part of what makes me feel balanced as a mother is being able to claim a bit of space in the house where you’ll find less of the clutter and chaos of life with a 3 and 5-year-old. We’re fortunate enough to have a pretty big rec room and this allows for our living room to be TV and toy free (well…on a good day!). Low seating and loungey pouffes ensure that your feet are always up and lots of greenery brings a cleansing feel to the space (including the piece above our mantle by Vancouver artist Heather March )

We’re massive food and wine lovers and this shelf at the end of our dining table houses a few of our go-to books, crystal decanters and this charming basket that belongs to my Grandmother – she tells me its only on loan ;)

One of my hobbies is sniffing around antique and reclaimed furniture shops for interesting pieces. This chair by Norwegian furniture designer Torbjorn Afdal is my best find by far. Not only is it cool to look at, it’s also insanely comfortable and durable.

My mom is a serious crafter so I’ve been the lucky recipient of many of her beautiful creations over the years, and this whimsical dream catcher is one of my absolute favourites.

I wear a lot of linen. My dear friend Anna Heyd (Flax Sleep co-founder) stoked my obsession for the textile long before the ideation of this awesome brand. Wearing linen feels substantial, luxurious, durable, breathable and soft – so if I’m wearing it, it only made sense that I should be sleeping in it! I can truly never go back.
