Flax Sleep was founded in the fall of 2017 by Anna Heyd, Oana Papuc and Vivian McCormick. We are a hospitality professional and two lawyers with entrepreneurial spirits, an appreciation of beautiful things, and a love of good sleeps. We saw a gap in the Canadian marketplace when it came to buying simple bedding online at accessible prices, and felt inspired to fill that void.
We chose to focus exclusively on French linen bedding instead of the more traditional cotton for a number of reasons. Linen sleeps cooler (but is still real cozy), uses less water in the milling process, and lasts much longer than cotton. But when it comes right down to it, we just love the way linen looks and feels: rustic and lived in, but timeless and elegant at the same time – kind of like your bedroom rolled right out of an issue of Kinfolk. For more reasons why #linenisbetter, check out our Why Linen? page.
Quality materials, high production standards, and ethical manufacturing practices were our priorities when we set out to find a factory with which to partner. Once we identified the perfect manufacturing partner, we travelled to Shenzhen to learn about the process of turning beautiful linen into the most amazing sheets, to see the quality of the working conditions for the craftsmen and women that are responsible for production, and to establish a long term partnership with our factory. We were thoroughly impressed with facilities, the process, and the professionalism of the owners. Read more about our trip in our first journal post here.
We’re a small, independent, female-founded Canadian team. And in addition to offering you luxurious linen bedding, we also believe in providing #ASafePlacetoSleep to women and children in need. That’s why we donate part of our proceeds (and all returned goods) to Atira Women's Resource Society to reduce waste and give back to our community.
